The most famous cannon of the civil war was the Napoleon cannon. It was developed in France and used by both the Confederate and the Union armies. It's full name was the 12-pounder Field Gun, Model 1857, but most people just called it "the Napoleon". The Napoleon can shoot a 12 pound cannon up to 1600 yards, and usually takes seven men to operate. While cannons are no longer used in combat, groups such as the Sons of Confederate Veterans still use the weapons as part of Civil War reenactments. By recreating history these groups hope to educate the citizen's of today and help them appreciate the struggles of the men and women that came before us. www.galenahistorymuseum.org tides.sfasu.edu
