The university was founded in Bangkok in 1943 by Italian-born art professor Corrado Feroci, who took the Thai name Silpa Bhirasri when he became a Thai citizen. It is the leading Thai university in the fine arts and archaeology[citation needed], and now includes many other faculties as well. It has about 22000 students. Silpakorn University is not only rich in history, but it is also considered one of Thailand's top public universities. It was originally established as the school of fine arts by Corrado Ferroci (Prof. Silpa Bhirasri) in 1923, who under the commission of King Rama V1, was appointed to work as a sculptor at the school. Initially assigned to teach Thai craftsmen the western technique and art of sculpture, Prof Silpa expanded his class to include members of the public who were also interested in learning as well. The artist later adopted Thai nationality and a Thai name known as Silpa Bhirasri. By 1943 the school's popularity led to it being given a new status as a University. Since then Silpakorn University has grown to offer fully fledged degree programs at both graduate and undergraduate level in all major fields of art and design, science and technology, health science, social sciences, management and music. เฟสบุ๊คมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร : www.facebook.com 119 Years Anniversary of Professor Silpa Bhirasri on 15 September 2011 at Silpakorn University Bangkok campus. Prof.Silpa Bhirasri (Thai: ศิลป์ พีระศรี, IPA: [sǐn pʰīːrásǐː]), born Corrado Feroci (15 September 1892 -- 14 May 1962) was an Italian-born sculptor who worked mainly in Thailand. He is considered the father of modern art in Thailand and was instrumental in the founding of today's Silpakorn University. Born in Florence, Feroci was invited to Thailand in 1923 to teach Western sculpture at the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Palace Affairs in 1923. In 1943, he founded what would later become Silpakorn University - the University of Fine Arts. When Italy surrendered to the Allies during World War II, Feroci changed his name and became a Thai national in 1944 to avoid arrest by the occupying Japanese army. Previously estranged from his wife in Italy, in his later years he married one of his Thai students. Feroci / Bhirasri was the designer and sculptor of many of Bangkok's best known monuments, including Democracy Monument, Victory Monument and the statue of King Rama I at Memorial Bridge. A Thai commemorative stamp was issued in 1992 on the centenary of his birth. His birthday, 15 September, is observed each year in Thailand as Silpa Bhirasri Day.
