The Master Musicians of Joujouka opened the headline, Pyramid Stage and the Glastonbury Festival in June 2011. For the rest of the weekend they played a series of impromteau sessions throughout the festival site. This was recorded at the megalithic stone circle at Worthy Farm on Saturday 25th June. The video was shot by Joachim Montessuis who collaborates with the Master Musicians for their Joujouka Interzone project. Alalilla "About the Night" "Pan, BouJeloud, the Father of Skins, dances through eight moonlit nights in his village, Jajouka, to the wailing of his hundred master musicians. Down in the towns, far away by the seaside, you can hear the wild whimper of his oboe-like raitas; a faint breath of PANIC borne on the wind. Inside the village, the thatched houses crouch low in their gardens to hide in the deep cactus-lined lanes. You come through their maze to the broad village green where the pipers are piping; fifty raitas banked against a crumbling wall blow sheet lightning to shatter the air. Fifty wild flutes blow up a storm in front of them, while a platoon of small boys in long belted white robes and brown wool turbans drum like young thunder. All the villagers, dressed in best white, swirl in great circles and coils around one wildman in skins. BouJeloud leaps high in the air on the music, races after the women again and again, lashing at them fiercely with his flails. He is wild. He is mad. Sowing PANIC. Lashing at anyone; striking real terror into the crowd. Women scatter like white marabout birds all aflutter and settle on one little hillock for safety, all huddled in one quivering lump. Preview of forthcoming film (in production) of the The Master Musicians of Joujouka Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival 2008 directed by Daragh McCarthy. In July 2008 the Master Musicians of Joujouka celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Brian Jones recording the iconic LP "Brian Jones presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka" (Rolling Stones Records 1971) with a two day festival. The highlight of the festival was a performance in the same spot in the centre of the village which began 40 years to the hour after the performance that Brian Jones recorded on 29th July 1968. In attendence at the festival were Brian's friends Anita Pallenberg and John Dunbar. the festival highlighted the authentic music, culture and traditions continued in the village to this day by the Sufi masters who live there. The highlight of the musical performance is the arrival of Boujeloud, a half goat, half man, figure likened to the ancient God Pan. This is the panic music written of by William S. Burroughs in his novels and non fiction writings. Children and relatives of the original musicians also attended in great numbers for this celebration of Brian Jones and the Master Musicians of Joujouka. Among those who particpated in the festival was Mallim Ali Abdelsalm El Attar who at 100 years of age is the oldest Master from that era in the village. he is the uncle of the current leader of the Master Musicians of Joujouka Ahmed el Attar.
